FIREFIGHTERS and BreathPlay

Firefighters and BreathPlay

Betsy Thomason's

Independently-funded research

Breathing is an underrated activity—unless you live on the edge, as firefighters and other emergency workers do.  For them, breathing is a matter of air or no air, calm or panic, life or death.  If any group of people could demonstrate the benefits of learning and using the BreathPlay method of efficient breathing it would be firefighters.

In 1989, two years after I discovered the personal benefits of adding BreathPlay to my daily exercise routine and outdoor activities, I conducted research to discover how firefighters might also benefit.  I trained a small group of Newark, New Jersey firefighters how to BreathPlay.  While just three of the original seven firefighters completed the four-session training program, they demonstrated their ability to expand their use of their self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) by almost one third.

In October 2011 at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held in Honolulu, I presented the results of that original, independently funded research.  Click HERE to access my PowerPoint presentation.  Click HERE to view the research abstract poster.
